Horror Review: Ice Cream Man (1995)

Poor Gregory! After being released from the Wishing Well Sanatorium, all he wants to do is make the children happy. So Gregory reopens the old ice cream factory, and all the unappreciative brats are reprocessed into the flavour of the day!

Ever watch a film and then as the years go on you completely forget about it and only have vivid memories of it and can' remember what film they're from? Well that's what "Ice Cream Man" was to me until I finally found it and re-watched it.

One thing that struck me about this film was the cast, for a b-movie it had quite a casting with the likes of Olivia Hussey ("Black Christmas", "Psycho IV: The Beginning " and "IT"), David Warner ("The Omen", "My Best Friend Is A Vampire", "Waxwork" & "In the Mouth Of Madness ") and of-course our lead, Clint Howard ("Evilspeak", "Disturbed", "Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker", "Leprechaun 2" and many more).

Talk about being perfect for a role, I couldn't imagine anyone else but Clint Howard playing the villainous Gregory 'Ice Cream Man' Tudor. He always plays a great creepy, sleazy character but he seems to seriously be enjoying himself and even took the role seriously. He screamed and yelled at the top of his lungs while driving in a car every day to the set in order to have a more gravelly voice for his role as Gregory.

One fact I've always found funny is that Director Paul Norman has directed over 100 films, with "Ice Cream Man" being the only film that was not pornographic. Yes this film was made by a porno Director, when I found this out I was surprised that with his background he didn't put more flesh on show, I guess he must've took it very seriously and I'm glad he did as the nudity aspect would've tarnished the films creepiness.

The film combines Horror and Comedy perfectly and the fact that the movie itself is VERY cheesy just makes it even better. I swear you'll never look at ice cream the same way ever again, I know I haven't!

"Ice Cream Man" is one of the best 80's style b-movie to not come out of the 80's, a true cult film that is a great watch if you just want to switch your brain off and be entertained.

Miscellaneous facts about the film:

This movie was sponsored in part by the Converse shoe company. Many characters wear Converse shoes, especially the classic Chuck Taylor All-Stars. There is also an extraordinary number of shots of shoes throughout the entire film.

The scenes at the sanitarium were shot at an actual abandoned sanitarium in Pasadena, California. Moreover, the Satanic drawings and graffiti were already on the walls of said abandoned sanitarium.

The filmmakers originally wanted to secure a PG-13 rating for the movie.

The first draft of the script was written in three days.

The movie was more of a spoof on the horror genre in an earlier draft of the screenplay.

Adult film director Paul Norman's sole foray into mainstream cinema.
