31 Days Of Horror - Day 16: Botched (2007)

During a heist in Russia, a professional thief finds himself dealing with serial killers, insane hostages, double-crossing psycho Russian hardmen and the real possibility of a horrible death.

This film actually passed me by, it wasn't until I came across it on one of those top ten lists (thank you StumbleUpon). After viewing the trailer I decided to give it a try.

"Botched" takes a-long time to get going and you start to wonder what you're in for as it plays out like a low budget crime film, where's the horror?! Well after over 20 minutes we get our first kill and you think that things will start to pick up, unfortunately it doesn't and there begins the films big problem.

The film keeps the same pace and usually a slow pace wouldn't bother me, but it needs to hold my interest and "Botched" just couldn't do that. (SPOILER ALERT!!!!) The big mistake was killing the funniest character so quickly, Yuri was easily the stand out guy and had me laughing with almost every line then he's gone and were left with the bland main character of Ritchie.

For a film that boasts a great cast they're given such one dimensional characters, well apart from 2 characters, Yuri and Boris, (SPOILER ALERT!!!!) with Yuri dead Boris filled in the comedic role but it just wasn't enough to carry the film. When the big name (Stephen Dorff) is a bland, dull character there's a serious problem.

"Botched" is billed as a comedy/crime/horror/thriller and there are aspects of each genre rolled in their and that makes a bit of a problem, the film tries to hard, it feels to forced. With each horror segment there's a comedic aspect and it just gets boring.

"Botched" is not the greatest of films but it has it's moments, there is a-lot worse out there. I'd recommend this if you were stuck for something to watch but if you don't watch it you're not missing anything special.
