My Love/Hate Relationship With Horror-Comedies

When you really think about it, it's hard to see these 2 genres together, Comedy & Horror. A gross out laugh-a-thon. Although they are very popular, I have a love/hate relationship with them. Allow me to explain why.

I love a good laugh, who doesn't?! But when I think of comedy I don't think of Horror, I think of films that are labelled as comedies, such as "Trading Places", "The Life Of Brian", "This Is Spinal Tap", "Fanboys", "See No Evil, Hear No Evil".....You get the idea

To me the Comedy element takes Horror out of the equation. Take "Shaun Of The Dead" for example, yes it's about zombies and a groups fight for survival, but is it really a horror? Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE this film! BUT apart from a couple of gory scenes it's mainly just an adult comedy film, but just because it's an adult comedy with a couple of gory scenes does it need to have the tag of Horror-Comedy?

Like I said before I enjoy a good laugh as much as the next person but I feel that the Horror-Comedy genre has taken the scare out of our beloved Horror genre, as-well as the Spoof movies you get a-lot of nowadays, such as the "Scary Movie's". When I pick up a film that has the label "Horror" on it I don't expect to be laughing (Unless it's THAT bad!) I want shock, gore, tenseness...

Now as the title says, I have a love/hate relationship with these films, as much as I feel they've dragged the genre down a peg or two I cant help but watch them, some I love! When done properly (As with any genre film) they are great entertainment! "Evil Dead 2", "Shaun Of The Dead", "Severance", "Doghouse", "Slither", "Young Frankenstein", "House", "The Cottage", "Night Of The Creeps", "Zombieland", "Black Sheep", too name just a few.

Truth is we Horror fans are divided on these films, some hate them, some love them, some love to hate them and some even find them a guilty pleasure. I'm with the latter, yes they're a guilty pleasure of mine, but what do you expect from someone who has a love/hate relationship with them!?
