Video Nasties

After the recent news of  "The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence" getting banned in the UK it got me thinking of the video nasties situation that arose in the 80's

In the 80's the BBFC (British Board of Film Censorship) took a strong stance on the abundance of gore filled horror films, mainly from the US and Italy. Such films as "Anthropophagous: The Beast", "Blood Feast", "The Burning", "Cannibal Apocalypse", "Cannibal Ferox", "Cannibal Holocaust", "The Driller Killer", "The Evil Dead", "The Funhouse", "The House by the Cemetery", "I Spit on Your Grave", "The Last House on the Left", "The Toolbox Murders" & many more were banned under the Video Recordings Act.

The whole event became worldwide news, in England the public turned on the films blaming them for people being murdered, it seemed that anything bad happening, it was the fault of these films.

There were also other films that were banned by the BBFC but not linked with the video nasties, such films as "The Exorcist", "Maniac", "Silent Night, Deadly Night" & "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre".

Looking back on the situation now really is quite a novelty, most of these films have now been released uncut & are firm favourites in the Horror genre. Take" The Evil Dead" for instance, watching it now its hard to believe that people blamed this film for people going mental, parents didn't want their children to see these films in-case they copied what they saw. This film series is now classed as comedy horror.

Ever since this situation happened studios have been afraid to push boundaries, often films get severely cut and are made for a younger audience, not adults. BUT lately film-makers have been pushing those boundaries again such as the aforementioned "The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence" & "A Serbian Film",

Although I don't agree with the context of "A Serbian Film" I am glad to see people are not afraid to push the boundaries again!
