Horror Review: Clown (2015)

A loving father finds a clown suit for his son's birthday party, only to realize that it's cursed.

Who doesn't love clowns? They're a cornerstone of the Horror genre and for good reason.

As someone who loves seeing clowns in a Horror setting I was really excited for this release, word was going around about this feature for quite some time, yet we never saw any official release and then as time went on it just kind of got forgotten about. New films were released and time passed by but people still wondered about this.

In 2015, three years after it was filmed, "Clown" finally got its release. I have no idea why it took so long for it to be released (though I'd like to know, what can I say I'm nosy like that) but people had been patient and if anything the anticipation for the feature helped it as curiosity got the best of most people.

The premise for this film is something that I really enjoyed, a lot more than I thought I would actually, it was something fresh and different to what we'd seen previously. I thought the way the lead character 'Kent' was wrote and the story are brilliant and really got you invested in what was going on with him throughout the feature.

One thing that people may or may not enjoy is the gore factor of the film, now I enjoy gore as much as the next person but when it's unnecessary and just used as a filler it can be irritating. In this feature it helps aid the story and can be quite sinister at the same time, it has confidence in what it's doing and in my opinion it fully delivers.

"Clown" is a disturbing feature with a dark story that is told very well, the film deserves a lot more recognition than it has initially got. I do highly recommend this film, it's one that I like to revisit quite often.

Miscellaneous facts about the film:

It was based on a short film by the same name, also directed by Jon Watts.

Movie posters featuring the clown were censored in Italy for being "too scary".

In the Arcade scene later in the film, various types of typical coin operated games are shown. One quick shot shows an unknown game with a Dinosaur that makes a certain sound effect before cutting away to the next shot. This sound effect is that of one of the various creatures in the 1993 Video Game "DOOM". Most notably the "Pinky Demons".

When Kent is writing down the address of Herbert Karlsson's warehouse, there is a close up shot of his hand where the audience can see something running through the veins in his hand, since it is travelling in the opposite direction to what blood would flow, it is most likely to be the essence of the Cloyne flowing through Kent's body.

Both Andy Powers and Laura Allen guest starred on the hit show Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
