Ten Years On: The Ruins

For this 'Ten Years On' post we take a look back at "The Ruins".

Does anybody else remember hearing about a new film that was coming out about killer plants?

I remember, I remember because I thought it was the funniest thing I had ever heard! I had visions of "Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes" running through my head, that was until I finally saw the trailer, that's when it all changed and I just had to see this movie. I was so curious as to how they managed to make a scary movie out of killer plants.

After finally getting to view the film I was just astonished, my initial thoughts about the film were so, so wrong. Here we had a film that actually had a thrilling story and also delivered a solid performance, it was just so unexpected and I know I wasn't the only one who had this experience as a lot of people had the same misconceptions.

The film gained quite a reputation for itself amongst the Horror community and that reputation is still going strong today and rightly so, it is a good quality Horror film that I personally feel never got recognition from the mainstream media that you see happen these days, maybe that's a sign of the times more than anything.

Personally I feel like this film is criminally under-rated and it's such a shame too. The film is actually based on a book of the same name by Scott Smith and it's one I keep meaning to read but unfortunately I keep forgetting about it, in fact I'm going to make a point to hunt down the book and make sure I get it read as I've heard nothing but good things.

Ten years on and I strongly feel like "The Ruins" could be released today and be a much bigger hit than it initially was, at least for those of us in the know we have a great film to watch and share with others.
