Horror Review: Emelie (2015)

A couple's replacement babysitter turns out to be more than they bargained for when she subjects their kids to a series of twisted activities.

There are some films out there that come out of nowhere and knock you sideways!

This film was one I discovered when I picked up on a whim as it was on sale in my local store, I'd never heard of it before and it was surprisingly cheap enough that I could actually afford to take a gamble on it and buy it (something I'm sure we can all relate to). I headed on home feeling excited about viewing my new purchase.

As I sat down to enjoy my bargain DVD I remember that I started thinking about what it would be like, I knew nothing about it and sometimes there's a stigma attached to such a cheap purchase, especially when it hadn't even been a year since its release. I wasn't prepared for what I was about to watch for the next 80 minutes.

What I discovered was an astounding feature that didn't rely on over the top gore or quotable one liners, this film had such confidence in its script, cast and crew that it didn't try to do anything else but tell a horrifying and gripping story. 80 Minutes minutes might seem like a short running time but trust me, it's all killer no filler.

There are scenes that may seem innocent enough then suddenly turn into something shocking that manages to get under your skin. The pacing is just perfect and it leaves you on edge as you're left wondering what is going to happen, also the dialogue itself plays a huge role and it was great to see such attention being paid to these details.

"Emelie" most certainly deserves a much bigger audience and I'm truly shocked at how low this film has flown under the radar, in fact it's criminal.
