Horror Review: American Mary (2013)

Medical student, Mary Mason, becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with the surgical world she once admired. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called ‘freakish’ clientele.

I had been so excited about this film for SOOO long that when I finally got a chance to watch it I was like a hyped up child on Christmas morning. I decided to watch the film properly and give it 110% attention so I switched the lights off, turned of all gadgets and turned up the volume. I was soon immersed in the twisted world of 'Mary Mason'.

We are introduced to Mary Mason, a promising medical student who like most in her position, is having serious money trouble. She starts to scrape the bottom of the barrel for big money, leave your dignity at the door jobs. Upon going for an interview for one of these jobs she ends up in a sleazy strip club, it's here that her life changes drastically overnight.

'Mary' is played by the amazing Katharine Isabelle who puts in another sensational performance, I truly hope she carries on doing more roles of this nature. I also have to mention the performance of Tristan Risk as 'Beatress Johnson', I have never seen her in anything before but based on her acting skills in this release I see her getting a-lot of offers for more work, she truly was fantastic. The rest of the cast also deliver top notch performances.

The Soska sisters have gifted us a rare, female led, character driven film. Mary is truly femme fatale with a scalpel. Watching this film it's so hard to believe that this is only their second film (It's nearly 4 years since "Dead Hooker In A Trunk") and I'm glad they took their time with it. I also love the fact it's so different to their previous film and you can tell they put their all into it. In my eyes they are the future of our beloved Horror genre.

The movie flows beautifully smooth, you just can't fault the directing as it plays out like you're reading a book. It has a raw pyscho-sexual erotic feel in the same vain as "American Psycho" (without Huey Lewis) which is no bad comparison at all. Once again the Twisted Twins have worn their hearts and influences on their sleeves and gave us a superb film, I'd even say another cult-classic.

"American Mary" is twisted, erotic, violent, entertaining and crazy. It's VERY rare for me label a film a must-see, I think in my entire time doing this blog I've only said it twice, so believe me when I say . . . YOU NEED TO SEE THIS FILM!!!
