The Rosemary's Baby Curse

Pin It now!

There are a few films that have had the 'cursed' tag placed on it over the years, "Rosemary's Baby" seems to be one of the less talked about these days but I still find it intriguing.

"The Omen", "Poltergeist", "The Exorcist".... Just a few films that have frightening stories both on and off the screen. Unfortunately they overshadowed a film that had a few intriguing stories behind it as-well and this film was released well before them, yes I'm obviously talking about "The Rosemary's Baby" curse.

Some say the events started on on the first day of filming when Mia Farrow was served with divorce papers by her then husband Frank Sinatra. If you watch the film you can notice it in her harrowing performance, especially in the latter half of the film.

Okay so being served divorce papers isn't exactly a curse but it was the first event to happen behind the scenes that would cause a-lot of suspicion, rumours and even murder amongst the cast and crew. Murder you say? Well let me tell you about it.

Roman Polanski was the Director of the aforementioned film and it's him that the 'curse' tag is centred around, you see he bought a house for him and his eight month pregnant wife Sharon Tate, I'm sure that name will ring a bell for a-lot of you. Unfortunately the person he bought the house off was was music producer Terry Melcher, who had previously refused to record Charles Manson's music

Manson was so outraged at Melcher that he ordered his cult members to go to Melchers house and murder him. Unfortunately Tate, who was only two weeks away from giving birth, was in the house with some friends when the cult attacked and all were subsequently murdered. Polanski was in London, England at the time when he was informed of the murders and returned to Los Angeles where the police, unable to determine a motive, questioned him about his wife and friends.

Around the time of Tate's murder, the film’s composer died of a brain clot, dying in exactly the same manner that a character in the film dies. Also Producer William Castle suffered kidney failure soon after the film was made, and swore the movie was cursed after crying out "Rosemary, for God's sake drop that knife" while being treated by medics.

In a strange twist of events In December of 1980, John Lennon was killed outside of the Dakota, the building where he lived, and where Rosemary's Baby had been filmed. Coincidence? Most likely but it still had an eerie feeling amongst conspiracy theorists. The curse was said to have returned in 2010 when 60's Playboy model Angela Dorian (who had a small role in the film) was charged with attempted murder after she shot her husband from close range, she was jailed for nine years.

Most of the facts may seem questionable and mere coincidence but they still get discussed to this day since the films release in 1968. The Charles Manson Story is a whole different story in itself but it's link with the film is still strong and still talked amongst conspiracy theorists and Horror fans. The "Rosemarys Baby" curse may not be as interesting to read as some other films supposed curses but along with the rest of them, we will never really know the truth.
